There are five things you should do when you first start your Facebook group.

  1. Write Your Description: It is important that people who come across your group know what the group is about. Your group should tell potential new members exactly what the group will include and how whether they want to join and engage.
  2. Upload a Cover Photo: Your cover photo creates a clear identity of what your Facebook group is about. If your group is about a place, consider making the cover photo a picture of that location. People should be able to tell what your group is by looking at your cover photo.
  3. Add People to Your Group: In order for your Facebook group to be a community, people need to be members of the group. You can start your group by adding friends and family and other people that you know would appreciate being a member of the group. It is important to make sure you find people who share interests and will value being a part of the group. As a pro tip: take the time to welcome new members to the group and make them feel special.
  4. Make Your First Post: When you start your group, it is important to get the conversation going. Your first post can be about a multitude of things. You can welcome people to your group, explain why you started the group or post a picture that relates to the group. Once you get the first post going, you are on your way to creating an engaged community.
  5. Write a Few Rules: Examples of rules include the kinds of posts that are encouraged, the types of behavior that are discouraged and your member approval process. Having clear rules will make your group start out on the right foot right from the beginning.
